Tribal Media

The Philippine Department of Tourism seconded Tribal Media in October 2007 to tour two American travel writers around Manila and Northern Palawan: the object was to get the most journalism mileage from the two writers, one from Islands Magazine, the other from Global Traveler. BBC correspondent and news agency editor Michael Barker and freelance writer and Tribal Adventures chairman Greg Hutchinson acted as guides and additional writers, multiplying the PR and journalism effort many-fold.

Foreign Correspondent Immersion

For journalism, politics and history students or for any one with a penchant for the off-beat, why not join a "follow the foreign correspondent" tour and meet some of the characters that keep the off-beat Philippine story constantly on the boil? Could you lie in bed and look straight-faced as Imelda Marcos serves you breakfast in bed in her Leyte island beach house? When a Muslim rebel leader is surrounded by a dozen heavily armed bodyguards, how do you approach him to inquire if he's as corrupt as people say he is? Has the journalist overstepped his mark, when a prominent Catholic priest bangs his hand on the table during an interview declaring: "I hate condoms, I hate condoms", prompting this cheeky remark from the journalist: "they're uncomfortable, aren't they, Your Eminence". Who would have expected the Churchman to agree? "They sure are," he said.

This is a pick-the-hack's brains tour for only one client at a time, priced at US$300 a day, with client and journalist paying for their respective costs and expenses. Photojournalism Adventure

Photojournalism adventures have been the vehicle for people from various walks of life to explore some far-flung corners of the Philippines, notably Tawi-Tawi, Zamboanga, Camiguin and the Bubunauan River in Mindanao, as well as the Calamian Archipelago in northern Palawan. Most unique, has been the ability of clients to get up close to some pretty remarkable characters, characters they would only otherwise read about in newspapers. Near Zamboanga, clients had the rare opportunity to grill Nur Misuari during a specially arranged media conference with the Muslim rebel leader.
